These goods enter the country through so-called ‘parallel imports’ – a route whereby products are imported via third countries without the consent of the trademark owner. After invading Ukraine, russia legalised this system to prevent shortages.
Luxury cars such as Porsche, BMW and even Ferrari are also imported via circumventive routes. Car dealers can circumvent sanctions through countries such as Turkey, Armenia and Kazakhstan. ‘Where there is demand, there will always be supply,’ says a russian dealer.
Although the moral limits of such arrangements are questionable, participants point out that they operate within the rules of the Eurasian Customs Union.
