Due to Austria's position, the European Union has postponed the adoption of the 19th package of sanctions. Consideration of the document has been postponed until next week.
This was announced on his Facebook page by Vladislav Vlasyuk, the president's representative on sanctions policy.
‘The 19th package was not adopted, but it seems that Austria's amendment was rejected. In a few hours, we prepared and submitted a document entitled ’Why giving Austrian Raiffeisen Bank International (RBI) 2 billion belonging to russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska is a bad idea". The next attempt to approve the 19th package will take place next week," the post says.
According to Reuters, Austria will not support the latest EU sanctions package against russia due to its insistence on unfreezing some russian assets to compensate for fines imposed on Austria's RBI. Other countries have stated that they cannot agree to such a move. They noted that this would effectively legitimise russian courts' decisions to confiscate Western assets and set a dangerous precedent. This could trigger a chain reaction, with European corporate assets in russia being exchanged for frozen russian assets in Europe.
