On Thursday, 27 November, the IJF Executive Committee voted to restore full national representation for russian athletes. The organisation's statement says that russian representatives will once again have the right to compete under their national flag, with their anthem and symbols, starting with the Grand Slam tournament in Abu Dhabi in 2025.
"The International Judo Federation (IJF) considers it appropriate to allow russian athletes to participate on equal terms. Historically, russia has been a leading country in world judo, and their full return is expected to enrich competition at all levels, while adhering to the IJF's principles of fairness, inclusiveness and respect,‘ the organisation said in a statement.
’Sport must remain neutral, independent and free from political influence. Judo, based on the values of peace, unity and friendship, cannot allow itself to become a platform for geopolitical goals. The decision to restore full national representation reflects the International Judo Federation's confidence in its ethical guarantees, as well as in the strength and integrity of the sport."
In May 2025, the International Judo Federation lifted sanctions on representatives of Belarus, allowing them to compete using state symbols.
