US President Donald Trump signed sanctions against two of russia's largest energy companies, Lukoil and Rosneft, on 23 October. More than 30 divisions of both companies were added to the list, including oil fields, gas and oil refineries across the country.
Within two days, the shares of both companies fell, and russia's largest oil corporations lost a total of $5.2 billion. Lukoil's shares fell by 7.2%, resulting in a loss of $3.66 billion. Rosneft shares plummeted by 3%, taking $1.56 billion with them.
The sanctions were supposed to take effect on 23 November, but on 15 November, the restrictions against Lukoil were postponed until 13 December.
Lukoil's stake in Bulgaria was also exempted from sanctions until 29 April. Hungary was exempted from US sanctions on russian oil and gas for a whole year. According to Reuters, in return, Hungary has committed to purchasing liquefied natural gas from the US under contracts worth almost $600 million.
