The new tariffs, which are the highest in Asia, will affect more than 55% of goods entering the United States, India's largest market.

The tariffs will hit labour-intensive industries such as textiles and jewellery manufacturing the hardest.

At the same time, key export goods such as electronics and pharmaceuticals are exempt from the tariffs, which is currently saving Apple's large-scale new investments in factories in India from the blow.

This move marks a sharp deterioration in relations between the two countries and a radical change in Washington's strategy, which for many years has sought to engage India as a counterweight to China.

Trump has criticised India for buying russian oil, saying it is financing Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin's war against Ukraine.

New Delhi defends its ties with Moscow and calls the US actions ‘unfair, unjustified and unreasonable’.

The super-high tariffs threaten the competitiveness of Indian exports compared to rivals such as China and Vietnam, and challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitions to turn the South Asian country into a major manufacturing hub.

Exporters of clothing, footwear and small industrial goods, including toys, are bracing for a drop in orders and possible job cuts.
