On Thursday, May 15, the Lithuanian Seimas expanded criminal and administrative liability for any violation or circumvention of international sanctions.
The Lithuanian Seimas approved amendments to the Law on International Sanctions by 87 votes, according to which violations committed through negligence will also be considered unlawful behavior.
The amendments also clarify what actions are prohibited in the event of the freezing of economic resources and explain the concept of “freezing of funds.”
Illegal behavior that violates international sanctions in force in Lithuania will be considered a violation of international sanctions. Such violations include, for example, providing access to funds or economic resources to persons subject to sanctions, unfrozen property, provision of services, and so on.
Disposing of restricted assets, providing prohibited services, or attempting to change Lithuania's borders will be punishable by up to five years' imprisonment.
In addition, provisions are introduced on special protection for whistleblowers who report violations of international sanctions.
