A group of MEPs has called on Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to stop the sale of Greek ships to companies linked to Russia. They stressed that since the start of the war, Greek shipowners have transferred a significant number of ships that are now helping Russia circumvent sanctions, earning around $4 billion in profits.
MEPs warned that the activities of the ‘shadow fleet’ had brought Russia an additional $9.4 billion in 2024 and contributed to the violation of the sanctions regime. They called on Greece to restrict the sale of ships to unknown owners and to control the transhipment of Russian oil in Greek waters.
