German Foreign Minister Johann Wazewulf (CDU) announced increased surveillance after Russia's shadow fleet was suspected of sabotaging cables and pipelines in the Baltic Sea.
“The threat situation has become increasingly serious in recent months. Broken cables, interrupted signals, and suspicious vessels are causing us great concern,” he said.
Wadefu also announced new sanctions against Russia's shadow fleet.
“As neighbors, NATO and the EU are doing everything possible to counter hybrid threats, including through further patrolling. Russia is a threat to all of us in the Baltic Sea region,” the minister stressed.
According to Wedefule, the shadow fleet is a security risk, so the EU will “directly impose further sanctions” against these ships.
“This will also help Ukraine, because the shadow fleet transports oil every day, which Russia sells in circumvention of sanctions,” the politician stressed.
