If the European Union does not extend economic sanctions against Russia and Belarus, it makes no sense for Lithuania to impose such sanctions on its own.

“We need a regional decision on sectoral sanctions. If we do not have a regional decision, sectoral sanctions do not make sense,” the prime minister told reporters in the Seimas on Thursday.

In that case, he added, such sanctions would be ineffective, cause economic damage, and not produce the desired result.

“That is why we need to agree on them or at least discuss them if there are circumstances under which countries in the region are prepared to accept sectoral restrictions,” he said.

If the EU does not extend economic sanctions and Lithuania does not reach agreement with its neighbors on their application, Lithuania will not impose restrictions on its own, Palutskas said.
