The European Union has changed the rules that allowed Russian oligarchs to avoid sanctions. Now, in order to be removed from the sanctions list, Russians must provide convincing evidence of a real break with business and ties in Russia.

According to the publication, the European Union has updated the criteria for assessing the possibility of removing Russian businessmen from the sanctions lists. The new rules complicate the procedure for lifting restrictions and are aimed at preventing abuse, particularly in court.

The reason for the tightening of checks was the attempts of some sanctioned individuals to challenge the restrictions in the European Court of Justice, claiming that they were allegedly unlawful.
