Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that his country would not support the European Union's new, 18th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation unless it received a clear plan on energy security from the European Commission.
According to Fico, Slovakia will find itself in a crisis situation if gas, oil, and nuclear fuel supplies from Russia are completely cut off. That is why, in the prime minister's opinion, Brussels must offer a real solution that would compensate for these risks before voting on new restrictions.
“The Slovak Republic will not support the upcoming 18th package of sanctions against Russia if the European Commission does not provide it with a real solution to the crisis situation that Slovakia will find itself in after the complete cessation of gas, oil, and nuclear fuel supplies from Russia,” Fico wrote.
On June 8, Fico said that Slovakia would block any European Union sanctions against Russia that would harm its national interests.
Also, on June 5, the Slovak parliament passed a resolution calling on members of the government to refuse to support new sanctions and trade restrictions against Russia in international organizations.
