The UK has confirmed its determination to ensure that frozen proceeds from the sale of Chelsea Football Club, linked to Russian businessman Roman Abramovich, are used for humanitarian needs in Ukraine.
This is stated in the Chancellor of the Exchequer's response to a parliamentary question on the future of funds frozen following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The government emphasizes that it is deeply disappointed by the lack of agreement with Mr. Abramovich on the mechanism for transferring these funds. At the same time, the door remains open for negotiations.
“We are fully prepared to resolve this issue in court if necessary to ensure that the funds are transferred to those affected in Ukraine as quickly as possible,” the response said.
As a reminder, this concerns more than £2.3 billion received from the sale of Chelsea FC in 2022, which was frozen in accordance with the sanctions regime. The Ukrainian and international communities have repeatedly called for these funds to be transferred for reconstruction and humanitarian support in Ukraine.
