Lithuania wants to be able to impose national economic sanctions against Russia and Belarus if the EU does not extend its sanctions. As part of this, Lithuanian lawmakers are discussing the possibility of amending the law on restrictive measures, which is due to be extended until May 2026. The proposal would allow Lithuania to apply economic sanctions in case the EU fails to extend its restrictions. This mechanism will be used as a ‘last resort’ and will include restrictions on the funds and economic resources of Russian and Belarusian individuals and legal entities supporting the war in Ukraine.

The proposal has been prepared by the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is currently being discussed to be registered through a member of parliament or a group of MPs. As the current EU sanctions against Russia expire in July, Lithuania wants to be ready to act in case the extension of sanctions becomes problematic again due to opposition, as it has already happened with Hungary.
