Hungary is not opposed to the adoption of the 17th package of European Union sanctions against Russia, so it could be officially approved this month.
The European Commission presented the draft 17th package of sanctions on 6 May at a meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives. Budapest does not oppose it because, according to the publication's source, the sanctions mainly concern legal entities ‘that are not problematic for them.’
At the same time, one of the interlocutors stressed that Hungary's current position does not guarantee similar behaviour when the sanctions are extended in July.
All EU member states are currently analysing the text of the sanctions package. It is expected that it will not cause serious controversy and will be adopted quickly, as it does not contain any controversial provisions.
Sources also suggest that EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas may announce the preparation of the package during the visit of EU foreign ministers to Lviv on 9 May. However, final approval is expected on 20 May at the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting.
