A petition has been launched in Slovakia demanding a referendum on lifting sanctions against Russia. According to the initiators, the document has been signed by nearly 400,000 citizens.
According to media reports, the petition calling for a referendum on lifting sanctions against Russia was handed over to Slovak President Peter Pellegrini today. The initiative was launched by the Slovak National Revival movement, which claims that the petition has been signed by almost 400,000 people.
The organisers of the petition are calling on the president to hold a referendum with the question: ‘Do you agree that the Slovak Republic should not impose sanctions against the Russian Federation that harm Slovak citizens, entrepreneurs and businesses?’
The leader of the movement, Robert Švec, expressed hope that Pellegrini would not reject the initiative, given that even before becoming president, he had repeatedly stated that anti-Russian sanctions were harmful to Slovakia.
The petition was also supported by the leader of the Slovak National Party (SNS) Andrej Danko and the head of the extra-parliamentary party ‘Republic’ Milan Uhlik.
The president's office said it would ‘work on the petition in accordance with the law.’
