The Weimar+ group of countries – France, Germany, Poland, Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the European Union – has announced its intention to increase aid to Ukraine. The group is also considering strengthening sanctions against Russia, the aggressor country, to force it to introduce a 30-day ceasefire.
Separately, it is noted that the group seeks to “keep Russian state assets frozen until Russia ends its aggression and compensates for the damage it has caused.” This is stated in a joint statement by the foreign ministers of the Weimar+ countries.
"We have recognized the need for a comprehensive approach to Euro-Atlantic security to protect our citizens and societies, overcome the consequences of Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, and address threats and challenges in all regions of our eastern and southern neighborhood, as well as in the Baltic Sea region. We will strengthen our partnerships to counter instability and promote peace and prosperity," the statement said.
The statement also says that the Weimar+ countries are ready to increase pressure on Russia, including through new sanctions. The group calls for “a 30-day ceasefire as a stable basis for serious and credible negotiations.”
“We called on Russia to abandon its unacceptable maximalist demands and preconditions without further delay, demonstrating its genuine interest in peace. We condemned the recent massive Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and the Ukrainian civilian population, which are a clear violation of international law,” the statement said.
The group promised to increase “military, humanitarian, and political support” for Ukraine.
The joint statement by the Weimar+ foreign ministers also said that Ukraine's partners “will never accept” agreements that would restrict Ukraine's defense industry or the military presence of partners on Ukrainian territory.
