During the meeting of the Coalition of the Determined in Kyiv on 10 May, the European Union and the United States agreed on coordinated sanctions against Russia if it does not agree to a complete and unconditional 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine.

Direct quote from Volodymyr Zelensky: ‘If Russia refuses to agree to an unconditional and complete ceasefire, sanctions must be imposed – enhanced sanctions against its energy sector and banking system.’

Direct quote from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk: ‘If Russia treats this proposal (for a 30-day ceasefire – Ed.) lightly, it will face a wave of new sanctions.’

The Polish leader also stressed that coordination with the United States is key to the effectiveness of this approach. French President Emmanuel Macron separately emphasised the agreement that sanctions would also be tightened if Russia subsequently violated the ceasefire agreement.

Direct quote from Emmanuel Macron: ‘In the event of a violation of the ceasefire, we have agreed that there will be massive sanctions. They are already being prepared and coordinated between the Americans and Europeans.’
