At this stage, Germany sees no reason to lift EU sanctions against Russia, particularly in the banking sector, no matter what Washington and Moscow agree on. Federal Government spokesman Steffen Gebestreit said this at a briefing.
Gebestreit also explained that the restrictions could also be lifted by a collective decision after a thorough discussion of the proposal, if it is received.
‘If the situation were to change, the heads of European states and governments would first need to discuss it and then make a decision. And I don't see any such initiative at this time,’ said the German government official.
