This will pave the way for a final vote, which is to take place next week at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg.

Previously, Vienna refused to agree to sanctions, demanding that the European Union unfreeze some russian assets to compensate for fines imposed by Moscow on Austria's Raiffeisen Bank International. However, this demand was not supported by other member states.

‘Austria supports continued pressure on russia and will approve the 19th package of sanctions on Monday,’ the country's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Slovakia also expressed concern about this provision, but according to EU diplomats, the European Commission is preparing a letter that should take Bratislava's position into account.

Final approval of the package is expected early next week.
