Belgium strengthens cooperation against russian shadow fleet

"The threat is real, even in our own North Sea. russia is trying to circumvent international sanctions by using stateless or flag-of-convenience vessels, thereby jeopardising not only maritime safety but also the environment, trade and our critical infrastructure. We cannot and will not allow this to happen," explained Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevo.

The countries have committed to developing joint recommendations that will ensure greater transparency, respect for international law and responsible behaviour at sea. ‘Pressure on russia must remain high. Only through joint efforts and coordinated action can we counter hybrid threats,’ Prevo said.

Iceland, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden and the United Kingdom have joined the initiative. "We call on other partners to join this initiative. Only together, as like-minded and determined allies, can we protect our security, our values and the international legal order," the minister concluded.
