Viktor Yanukovych lost his case in the EU Court and had his requests to lift sanctions imposed against him denied after a decade-long legal battle in which he claimed there was no concrete evidence against him.

The EU first imposed sanctions on Yanukovych in 2014, and then again in 2022 after russia launched a full-scale war against Ukraine.

The 18-page reasoning for the decision states that Yanukovych's actions as then-president clearly contributed to the destabilisation of the situation in Ukraine, and therefore the EU had grounds to include him on the relevant sanctions list.

The court took into account that Yanukovych did not distance himself from the russian authorities after the events of 2014 and noted his role in March 2022, when russian troops were stationed near Kyiv.

The court also rejected a parallel appeal by Alexander Yanukovych against EU sanctions imposed on him for doing business in Russian-occupied territories.

Jozwiak notes that not only the Yanukovyches' appeals were rejected, but also those of Russian oligarch Abramovich.

‘A big win for European sanctions against russia today in the EU Court: appeals by both Viktor Yanukovych and Roman Abramovich to be removed from the sanctions lists have been rejected,’ Jozwiak wrote.
