The Estonian government has decided to increase the effectiveness of control over the movement of goods from russia that are subject to sanctions.
Prime Minister Kai Kallas said that despite the restrictions, attempts are being made to circumvent sanctions on the border with russia, and the new EU sanctions package has increased the risks even further. She noted that replacing the current random checks based on risk assessment with a full inspection of goods and vehicles would give the authorities more confidence that goods that could support the russian military machine would not cross the Estonian border.
At the same time, Estonia will continue negotiations with Finland, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland on the implementation of common requirements and procedures at the border.
The government has instructed the Ministry of Finance, in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and other agencies, to prepare an action plan to introduce full customs control at the external borders of the European Union in the direction of exit from Estonia.
