"In June, the activity of 343 ships transporting Russian oil in circumvention of restrictions fell by almost half. This is the result of coordinated sanctions by the EU, the US and the UK. Most of these ships are already under sanctions. The ability to finance the war is declining because Russia is very dependent on this fleet for the sale of energy resources,‘ wrote the Ukrainian official, adding that ’pressure must continue."
Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia has been increasingly using such vessels, which are characterised by opaque ownership structures and dubious insurance. European countries have repeatedly accused these vessels of creating environmental risks and damaging underwater infrastructure, including energy and telecommunications networks.
