Republican Senator Lindsey Graham wrote about this on Twitter after meeting with Trump on 7 January.

Congress may consider the bill as early as next week, Graham adds. He adds that if passed, the law will be able to ‘punish’ countries that buy cheap russian oil, which provides the Kremlin with money for its war against Ukraine. This applies in particular to China, India and Brazil.

‘This is a very timely decision, as Ukraine is making concessions for peace, while Putin only talks, continuing to kill innocent people,’ Graham notes.

The bill was drafted by Republican Lindsey Graham and Democrat Richard Blumenthal, but it has a total of 119 co-sponsors among Congressmen — both Democrats and Republicans — who support Ukraine. The legislative initiative calls on President Trump to impose sanctions on russia if it refuses to negotiate a peace agreement with Ukraine, violates a concluded peace agreement, launches a new invasion of Ukraine, or attempts to overthrow, destroy, or undermine the Ukrainian government.

The sanctions include a 500 per cent tariff on any country that purchases russian oil or uranium and a 500 per cent tariff on russian exports to the United States.
