It is noted that for the first time, Britain imposed direct sanctions against two russian oil giants, Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegaz.
These energy companies produce more than one million barrels of oil per day, for which, at current prices, they receive about $23 billion a year, which is more than Jamaica's GDP.
The profits from these two companies fill the military treasury of russian leader vladimir putin and contribute to russia's war against Ukraine.
“Oil revenues are the lifeblood of putin's military economy. We will not allow oil revenues to jeopardize the lives of Ukrainians, and we will not allow russia to continue to fill its coffers as it continues to threaten our collective security. The fight against russian oil companies will drain russia's funds for war, and every ruble we take out of putin's hands will help save Ukrainian lives,” said British Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
He added that this is why he has made it his personal mission “to deter the kremlin and the companies that support it, for the benefit of our democracy and common security.”
In turn, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the United Kingdom, by imposing another package of sanctions, had once again significantly limited putin's ability to finance aggression.
“I am grateful to the United Kingdom for its unwavering support and decisive actions against the russian military machine. By imposing sanctions on the two largest russian oil companies, the UK has once again significantly limited Putin's ability to finance aggression,” Zelenskyy said.
He emphasized that Ukraine appreciates the UK's ongoing efforts to counteract the shadowy operations of the russian navy, which remain a key element of the oil trade.
“These synchronized actions with the United States demonstrate the strength of international unity,” Zelenskyy said.
