By the end of 2024, the United States plans to impose new sanctions on russia that will affect the energy sector.
“There are high expectations from this package. It will significantly affect the willingness of contractors to work with russian suppliers,” said Vladyslav Vlasiuk, the Presidential Commissioner for Sanctions Policy.
Thus, the sanctions package envisages restrictions for more than 100 tankers currently used by russia. In addition, the next packages of the EU and the UK are expected to increase sanctions against russia's shadow fleet.
According to Yulia Pavytska, head of sanctions at the Kyiv School of Economics, if the new sanctions affect many tankers at the same time, it will become a serious problem for russia.
“They will have to look for replacements for dozens of old vessels, not just a few, to maintain the same volume of oil trade. It is difficult to find so many tankers at once on the secondary market, where they usually buy this 'scrap metal'. So this can really have a significant impact on their ability to maintain exports,” Pavytska said.
In total, according to the Kyiv School of Economics, the shadow fleet of the russian Federation cost them about $10 billion.
