The European Union is threatening to impose an additional package of sanctions against russia's so-called “shadow fleet” after another damage to an electric cable in the Baltic Sea and the detention of an oil tanker by Finnish authorities.

The document emphasizes that shadow fleet vessels threaten security and the environment, while financing russia's military budget.

On December 25, the Estlink 2 electric cable connecting Estonia and Finland malfunctioned in the Baltic Sea. According to preliminary estimates, the damage to the cable was most likely caused by the anchor of the oil tanker of the russian “shadow fleet” Eagle S. During the detention of the vessel, the anchor was not found. The incident is being investigated as an act of vandalism.

On December 26, the traffic of ships from the Bosphorus Strait in both directions was suspended due to the breakdown of the Panama-flagged tanker Cordelia Moon, which was heading to Novorossiysk. The vessel is considered to be part of russia's so-called “shadow fleet.” The Turkish coast guard towed the tanker away, and traffic through the strait was restored.
