The European Parliament is preparing to pass a resolution calling for more “targeted” measures against russia’s shadow fleet.

The European Parliament insists on “systematic sanctioning” of ships transporting russian oil and calls on the EU to strengthen satellite monitoring and “targeted inspections” of tankers. Other proposals include new requirements for ships to show proof of insurance in EU waters.

russia increasingly uses a fleet of more than 600 old tankers with unknown insurance and unclear ownership to transport its crude oil around the world. Trade in products brings the kremlin almost half of its revenues.

There are growing concerns in the West that the old tankers could trigger an environmental disaster near the EU after it was reported last month that the shadowy fleet was linked to numerous oil spills in the world's oceans.

Experts have repeatedly warned that more oil spills are now likely, which could wipe out local wildlife. In the proposal, MEPs argue that the bloc should “ensure sufficient preparedness” for oil spills.

The resolution is to be voted on this week.

As you know, the EU has banned all maritime imports of russian oil and set a price ceiling of $60 per barrel. However, russia now transports about 80% of its crude oil on ships that are not under Western control.
