The publication's data shows that the Valera, which loaded LNG at Gazprom's Portovaya plant on the Baltic Sea in October, arrived today at the Beihai import terminal in southern China. The Portovaya plant and the Valera ship are subject to US sanctions imposed to restrict russian LNG exports.

China, which does not recognise unilateral sanctions, has increased its purchases of blacklisted russian gas in recent months, strengthening energy ties between the countries. Beijing has also ignored US calls to stop buying russian oil, which is likely to be a topic of trade talks between Washington and New Delhi this week.

In addition to Portovaya, russia has two other LNG export plants on the Baltic Sea: in Vysotsk (Novatek) and Arctic LNG 2 in Siberia, which began supplying gas to China at the end of August. The total volume of russian LNG supplies to China, including unauthorised plants, increased by approximately 14% from September to November compared to last year.

Satellite images from mid-October showed that some of the gas from Portovaya was being transferred to another vessel registered to a Hong Kong company, which sent false location signals and was spotted near China last month. The current location of the vessel is unknown.
