“No one wants peace more than the people of Ukraine. But there is only one way to achieve the just and lasting peace they seek. It is by giving Ukraine military and financial strength, and at the same time by continuing to exert maximum pressure against Russia,” said von der Leyen.

She noted that the EU sanctions are a sensitive blow to the russian economy, which is facing high inflation and record interest rates. Currently, the EU is preparing the 16th package of sanctions against russia, and continues its efforts to divest from russian fossil fuels.

“It is extremely important that member states continue to freeze russian assets. We can now continue to think about how to find the most creative way to use these assets to support Ukraine in its fight for freedom. We have to show the kremlin that the longer the war lasts, the higher the price for russia will be,” von der Leyen emphasized.
